Starting on April 4th, ESPN will air the fourth season of “Gruden’s QB Camp,” where the Super Bowl winning coach/Monday Night Football analyst invites departing college quarterbacks down to his office in Florida and “prepares” them for the NFL. Basically, he yells at them or makes them try and remember very confusing play-calls. The show that has become a traditional stop for exiting college stars will include many exciting moments of Gruden frowning and intimidating youngsters.
This year Gruden and his show substitutes overwhelming quality – Luck, RGIII, Wilson, Tannehill – with quantity, including three non-QBs: LB Manti Te’o, OL Luke Joeckel, and RB Marcus Lattimore.
ESPN Draft guru Mel Kiper Jr. and Scouts Inc. has West Virginia QB Geno Smith as the only quarterback being drafted in the first round. This is a nationally televised showcase for these players’ personalities, knowledge and ability to defend themselves against whatever in-game blunders that Gruden finds. And he will find some.
Here are the quarterbacks for this season of “Gruden’s QB Camp:”
Matt Barkley (USC)
Tyler Bray (Tennessee)
Zac Dysert (Miami, OH)
Mike Glennon (N.C. State)
Landry Jones (Oklahoma)
EJ Manuel (Florida State)
Ryan Nassib (Syracuse)
Geno Smith (West Virginia)
Tyler Wilson (Arkansas)
The obvious standout guest is Notre Dame Linebacker Manti Te’o, who will make his first television appearance since his tell-all fake-girlfriend interview with Katie Couric last month. This will be a great chance for Te’o to try and shift the media attention surrounding him back to football. But like every NFL team with whom Te’o will meet, it would be neglectful and hypocritical for Gruden to not at least question Te’o about the hoax. Though Te’o’s game against Alabama may raise more red flags than him believing someone in the 21st Century couldn’t figure out how to video chat.
Should be interesting. And remember, Spider 2Y Banana.
