Sergio Garcia was tied for the lead with Tiger Woods at the Players Championship, until he hit his tee shot into the water around the famed island green 17 at TPC Sawgrass. Then Garcia he hit his second shot from the tee box on 17 instead of the normal drop zone. He hit that second tee shot into the water and finished the 17th hole with a quadruple bogey. This eliminated Garcia from contention and rattled his famously fragile golfing confidence so much that he, of course, hit his 18th hole tee shot into the water.
ESPN’s Darren Rovell estimated that Garcia’s fall from second place to a tie for seventh caused him to lose $800,000. Other than the money, this will take months to get over. Garcia should be on the phone to Adam Scott right about now.
